Description:
In the last decade of the 19th century, Johann Loetz Witwe experienced remarkable growth, driven by innovation and artistic pioneering under the leadership of Max Ritter von Spaun. A turning point in this development was the influence of Tiffany’s Favrile glass, presented at exhibitions in Reichenberg and Vienna in 1897. This shimmering, iridescent style inspired Loetz to explore new techniques, leading to the creation of their iconic Phänomen glass.
Loetz developed unique methods for applying metallic oxides to hot glass, resulting in a spectacular iridescent effect with deep, shifting hues. These techniques, incorporating patterns like waves, spirals, and droplets subtly integrated into the glass, gave a natural vibrancy and depth to the pieces. This vase, crafted in the form of a flower bud and featuring delicate ribbing, is an exquisite example of Loetz’s early designs, created during a time when these innovative techniques were still in their pioneering stage.
The 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, where Loetz presented its iridescent glass, was a milestone that earned international recognition and admiration. The exhibition allowed Loetz to showcase its glassworks alongside other world-renowned artists and marked the peak of their artistic explorations. Loetz received the prestigious Grand Prix, cementing their status as leading glass artists and making their work sought after internationally.
This vase, blown in a flower bud shape with a dynamic, freely formed mouth, reflects Loetz’s early pioneering in iridescent glass and symbolizes the rise of Art Nouveau. The organic mount adorned with iris flowers enhances the natural forms and iridescent sheen, making the vase not only a technical masterpiece but also a work of art that embodies Loetz’s creative vision and artistic experimentation during this period.
