This exceptionally refined porcelain vase was designed around 1900 by Fanny Garde for Bing & Grøndahl, a leading Danish porcelain manufactory that played an important role within the Art Nouveau period. The vase is executed in high-quality, finely fired porcelain and reflects an outstanding level of technical and artistic mastery.
The body of the vase is dominated by a deep, rich cobalt blue ground, over which a subtle and harmonious composition of stylized leaf motifs unfolds in soft green tones. This underglaze decoration has been applied with great precision, creating a lively yet restrained surface that is characteristic of the aesthetic of Bing & Grøndahl.
The transition to the neck is marked by a richly modelled and openworked section, composed of overlapping flower petals. These sculptural blossoms are finely detailed with incised veins, creating a delicate relief that enhances the naturalistic character of the design. A particularly refined detail is the subtle use of color: parts of the petals are gently heightened with a soft lilac tone, which, in combination with the white porcelain and delicate gilt accents, lends the piece an elegant sense of depth and nuance.
The openworked neck, where the floral elements seem to detach from the surface, gives the vase a distinctly sculptural presence and a rare lightness of form. This interplay between solid and open structures is characteristic of the innovative vocabulary of Art Nouveau design.
As artistic director and designer at Bing & Grøndahl, Fanny Garde had a remarkable ability to translate nature into a refined and stylized visual language. Her works are among the most highly regarded of the period, celebrated for their balance between technical perfection and artistic expression.
This vase represents a rare and museum-quality example of Danish Art Nouveau porcelain, in which material, technique, and design come together at an exceptional level.
