This vase is our second mounted piece attributed to the renowned Parisian firm Boudon & Klähr. Created during the golden era of Art Nouveau, circa 1900–1905, it is the result of a remarkable collaboration between Johann Loetz Witwe of Austrian Bohemia and Boudon & Klähr of Paris. This piece beautifully unites the elegance of Austrian Jugendstil with the fluid artistry of French Art Nouveau.
Blown by Johann Loetz Witwe, the vase features a rich ruby red glass as its base color and is executed in the highly celebrated Papillon decor. Introduced in 1898, Papillon is among Loetz’s most iconic and widely used designs. It is distinguished by its delicate, iridescent dot pattern, which subtly shifts in color depending on the base glass—whether Creta, Candia, Cobalt, or, as in this case, Ruby.
Boudon & Klähr, based in Paris, were exclusive representatives of Loetz glass in the French capital. This particular vase, sold solely through Boudon & Klähr, is a superb example of the synthesis between Austrian and French Art Nouveau aesthetics. The pewter mount further enhances its unique character, reflecting the organic and flowing lines typical of French design from this period.
According to the literature, the glass was specially commissioned by Boudon & Klähr from Johann Loetz Witwe. However, the maker of the pewter mount remains unknown.
