This elegant Art Nouveau vase was crafted by Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most influential designers and glass artists of the fin de siècle. The object belongs to the renowned Favrile glass line—an innovative type of iridescent glass personally developed and patented by Tiffany in 1894. The vase is signed on the underside with the engraved marks “L.C.T.” and the serial number “D1798,” confirming that it is an authentic early example from Tiffany’s own workshops.
Favrile Glass – An American Revolution in Glass Art
Favrile glass, developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, is characterized by a strong iridescence achieved by incorporating metal oxides into the molten glass during the production process. This technique creates a rich, permanent luster that never fades. Inspired by ancient Roman and Syrian glass techniques, Tiffany elevated this process to new artistic and technical heights, unmatched in American glassmaking.
Execution
The vase is blown in a light green base color and richly decorated with white pulled glass threads that radiate vertically across the surface. Some of the thread ends curl gracefully into flame-like forms, creating a vivid and dynamic decoration. This “sea of flames” is further enhanced by the exceptional iridescence of the surface, which shifts in color from magical green to shimmering hues of orange, purple, and gold depending on the light.
The vase’s form is both balanced and elegant: a flat foot provides stability for the elongated, bulbous body that gently opens into the mouth. The overall design exudes the refined aesthetic that is characteristic of Tiffany’s work and the American interpretation of the Art Nouveau style.
