Description:
This remarkable Art Nouveau vase was produced by the German glassmaker Schliersee, located in the southern region of Bavaria. Though relatively small in scale, Schliersee was known among connoisseurs for the refined quality of its artistic glass. While less well-known than contemporaries such as Johann Loetz Witwe, certain pieces by Schliersee can rival those of the more established names in terms of craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal.
The vase is composed of double-layered glass: a warm yellow interior overlaid with a deep ruby red exterior. The application of iridescence lends the surface a lustrous sheen that shifts with the light—an effect highly prized during the Art Nouveau period for its vibrant and almost ethereal quality.
Its elegant, asymmetrical form, with a gently rounded body and narrowing neck, contributes to the organic appearance that is so characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. The vase is set in its original brass mount, decorated with a chestnut motif that further underscores the natural inspiration of the piece. The mount is marked on the underside with “S J 8,” indicating authenticity and likely a model reference within the production line.
An exceptional example of German Art Nouveau glass, this vase presents a rare combination of technical finesse, aesthetic harmony, and nature-inspired design.
