Daum Frères – École de Nancy
This refined Art Nouveau vase was created by the prestigious Daum Frères workshop in Nancy, renowned for their masterful glass artistry at the beginning of the 20th century. Under the leadership of Auguste and Antonin Daum, the firm developed innovative techniques and gained international recognition for their naturalistic and poetic decorations.
Design and Execution
The vase features a slender, cylindrical form that subtly flares towards the body. This model was used by Daum for a wide range of creations, demonstrating the success and versatility of the design. The shape lent itself perfectly to the application of detailed decorations.
At the base of the vase, brown glass powders are encased, irregularly applied in a pattern reminiscent of upward-rising flames. From this base emerge graceful cornflowers (bleuets), a beloved motif within the Art Nouveau movement.
The flowers are executed with exceptional refinement and realism in vivid blue enamel. Notably, the design depicts various stages of bloom, from closed buds to flowers in full bloom. This detail not only highlights the natural cycle of life but also reflects the extraordinary attention to detail and craftsmanship of the Daum glassblowers and decorators.
The subtle yellow background, created by encased yellow glass powders, produces a warm glow that emphasizes the blue flowers and evokes a harmonious, natural ambiance.
Signature
The vase bears an etched signature “Daum Nancy” accompanied by the characteristic Cross of Lorraine on the body. This signature can be dated to around 1905-1910.
This vase is a splendid example of Daum’s ability to unite nature and artistry. The subtle color palette, the realistic floral decoration with attention to various stages of bloom, and the technical perfection make this piece a textbook example of Daum’s glassmaking excellence.
