Daum Frères – École de Nancy
Daum Frères, founded in the late 19th century in Nancy, France, was one of the most prestigious glassmakers of the Art Nouveau period. Under the leadership of Auguste and Antonin Daum, the workshop became renowned for its innovative techniques and unique ability to blend art and function. Their designs, often inspired by the natural world, earned international acclaim for their organic forms and detailed decorations.
Design and Execution
This refined Art Nouveau vase, produced by Daum Frères, features the beloved Paysage d’hiver (Winter Landscape) décor. The vase has a gently flaring cylindrical shape with a subtly expanding body. The execution is of exceptional refinement and quality, creating the impression of gazing into a tranquil winter forest on a dark, frosty day. The intricate landscape reveals delicate, snow-covered trees beneath a soft, atmospheric sky rendered in warm tones.
The vase was created using the famous cameo glass technique, where multiple layers of glass are etched and enameled to create depth and texture. Every detail—from the fine lines of the branches to the gentle color transitions in the sky—demonstrates Daum’s technical mastery and artistic vision.
Signature
The vase is signed on the underside with “Daum Nancy” in black enamel paint, accompanied by the characteristic Cross of Lorraine and the letters “S.G.” This addition refers to the decorator responsible for the refined finishing of the vase.
Artistic Perfection
The Paysage d’hiver décor is a prime example of Daum’s ability to unite emotion and nature in glass art. The combination of carefully selected colors, the play of light and shadow, and the flawless application of techniques such as cameo engraving and enameling make this piece a highly desirable object for collectors and enthusiasts of the Art Nouveau period.
