Johann Loetz Witwe – MEdici – Phänomen genre 2/484
This rare Jugendstil vase, crafted by Johann Loetz Witwe, is executed in the Medici décor (also known as Phänomen Genre 2/484). Introduced in 1902, this décor is characterized by a rich, lustrous iridescence and complex vertical lines that elegantly flow along the vase. What makes this particular piece exceptionally rare is its opal-blue base color, which, in harmony with the Medici décor, creates a mesmerizing effect. This use of color is among the most rare and valuable variations within this décor line.
This vase showcases a stunning example of Loetz’s mastery in glassblowing and intricate forms. The round base transitions smoothly into a body with graceful twisting, accentuating and enhancing the vertical Medici décor. The square opening at the top adds a playful yet balanced touch to the design, perfectly exemplifying Loetz’s innovative approach to shaping art glass.
Johann Loetz Witwe – Max Schwarz
Although the original design drawing was lost in the devastating fire that struck the Loetz factory in 1903, the production number for this model was recently rediscovered. An identical vase, adorned with a silver decoration by the renowned Viennese silversmith Max Schwarz, revealed this number. Schwarz, who frequently applied silver overlay decorations to Loetz glass, engraved both the number of his own design and Loetz’s production number into the pontil of the glass. This discovery now confirms that the vase was designed and produced in 1903 under Series II – number 3/460.
With this vase, Johann Loetz Witwe once again affirms its status as one of the most influential glass manufacturers of the Jugendstil period. The fusion of artistic vision and innovative technique makes this piece a unique collectible, cherished by art enthusiasts and museums around the world.
