The Medici series

This impressive Jugendstil vase, created by Johann Loetz Witwe, is executed in the prestigious Medici décor, also known as Phänomen Genre 2/484. Introduced in 1902, this décor is distinguished by its brilliant iridescence and the elegant vertical lines that adorn its surface. Particularly noteworthy is the rare Russian green base color—a deep, glossy shade that enhances the Medici pattern and gives the vase a refined, luxurious appearance. This color variant ranks among the rarest executions of this décor.

The vase’s design showcases Loetz’s technical ingenuity and artistic mastery. The round foot transitions seamlessly into a twisted body, giving the vertical lines of the décor a dynamic effect. The vase culminates in a square opening at the top, lending the piece a playful yet balanced aesthetic. This combination of form and décor reflects Loetz’s innovative approach to glass art at the turn of the century.

Lost Design Drawings and the Contribution of Max Schwarz

Although the original design drawing was lost in the tragic fire that destroyed much of the Loetz factory in 1903, the production number for this model has nevertheless been preserved. This was made possible thanks to an identical example that was embellished with a silver overlay by the renowned Viennese silversmith Max Schwarz. Schwarz, celebrated for his refined silver mounts on Loetz glass, engraved both his own decoration number and the Loetz production number into the pontil. As a result, we know that this specific model was designed and produced in 1903 under Series II – number 3/460.

This vase not only illustrates the artistic progressiveness of Johann Loetz Witwe but also highlights the technological innovation that established the glassworks as one of the leading producers of the Jugendstil period. With its rare color, refined décor, and exceptional design, this piece stands as a true showpiece for collectors and museum collections worldwide.
